This private batch of traditional
loose green puerh comes from Simao, Yunnan Province. It is a product
of a small family run production that spans several generations. What
makes this collection unique from the popular wet storage of the 90s
is the exceedingly clean, dry storage these leaves have undergone resulting
in spectacularly vivid and pulsating characters. The tea leaves are
harvested from natural growth plantation consisting mainly of tender
top leaves that are strong in aroma and flavor. The leaves are traditionally
hand processed, undergoing an intensive high-rolling procedure to lock
in the flavors of the tea before being sun dried and allowed to slowly
mature in a porous earthenware container. Reaching an adolescence stage
the tea shows aged characters combined with the lingering remnants of
youth. The quality of the tea leaves easily allow for upwards of 10
steeping.
While the sharp, raw, mouth numbing
bitterness and youthful characters have noticeably faded into the background
this tea remains very much alive and active making it an ideal candidate
for further ageing. The deep color of age exhibited in the brew shows
excellent clarity. After flushing the warm and sweet aroma of the leaves
open to a combination of wood, camphor, fragrant blossoms, plums, organics
and a range of other minor nuances. The tannins and flavor is strong
and can be considered rough on the palate, a normal state at this stage
of adolescence. The brew exhibits a complex range of flavors starting
with dominant flavors of wood, wild mushrooms and peat in the initial
steeps followed by an emerging sweetness of fruits and rock sugar in
later steeps. The finish is cool and fragrant. The depth and complexity
in this tea will continue to develop and benefit from further ageing.
